Basement Extension - Notting Hill
A basement extension to a large family home in Notting Hill, London.
The existing lower ground level of the house is lowered to provide greater ceiling heights for a new open-plan kitchen and dining space that opens onto a rear landscaped garden.
A new basement level beneath the existing house provides leisure and entertaining spaces. Extending beyond the rear of the house, the basement extension contains a new swimming pool, located below the rear garden.
The pool floor can be raised allowing the depth of the pool to be adjusted for all users, perfect for a family with small children. When the pool floor is fully raised, heat and humidity within the room can be reduced, allowing the pool room to transform into a large entertaining space.
The basement also contains a gym, bar and cinema room, along with smaller ancillary spaces such as changing room, wc, steam room and laundry room.
A second lower-ground extension at the front of the house provides a new housekeeper’s apartment, connected to the main house but also with its own entrance accessed directly from the street.
Natural light is brought into the basement via new rooflights in the garden space above. Mechanical ventilation is also combined with natural ventilation through a small external lightwell.
